Khotan rugs and carpets are produced in Western China. Not all Khotan rugs would be from Khotan. The name is given to rugs and carpets that come from Xinjiang. People who have historic knowledge of these rugs say that the production of these rugs and carpets began when carpets began to be imported into China from the Mughals in the subcontinent. the Mughal dynasty weavers too, were one of their kind and their tapestries, rugs and carpets were famous the world over as well. Chinese weavers probably began production to beat the competition for their economy and boost up their financial situation.
Some designs in these rugs are very rare and unusual. One rug for example has its design derived from Kuba rugs produced in the caucasus region.
